Do you need some tips for starting a capsule wardrobe in 2023? You might have already started with some easy rules to follow that seem to work every time: buy things you can combine, invest in great quality, and donate items you don’t use anymore.
But as much as we want to believe in the capsule wardrobe, it’s harder to achieve than some make it seem. The reality is that our wardrobes are often filled with a lot of items that don’t actually go together, but we have trouble getting rid of.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve your perfect capsule wardrobes — if you know what to do!
We did research on creating a capsule wardrobe and actually created one as well. Here are 4 tips for starting a capsule wardrobe to help get you started on the right track.
1. Know what you own
We’ve all heard that a well-organized closet is the key to success. In a capsule wardrobe, you want to do the same thing with your clothing. In addition to keeping everything in its place, you want to keep track of which pieces go with which others. If you have a few staple pieces that you always wear, you can simply wear them in a variety of combinations so that you don’t get stuck in a rut. This will help you break out of it and feel more comfortable in your own skin.
A great way to keep track of what you own and possible combinations is the Whering app. This is a digitalized wardrobe app, or capsule wardrobe app, where you can easily see your items and can create combinations.
Pro tip: log all your current clothes and use the Whering app for a month. The app creates stats on how often you have worn certain items. This might make it easier for you to keep the items you truly wear, and toss the ones you never touch (but are keeping in case you “someday want to wear it”).
2. Wear what works for you
This is the most important rule of all when it comes to wearing a capsule wardrobe. Follow your eyes – and your heart – when it comes to what you wear. If you find that certain colors look good on you, wear that. If a pair of jeans look great on you, wear that.
There are tons of articles on the internet about finding out your color palette or body shape. It’s great to read into this, but at the end of the day, you should wear items that make you feel good. So if that means breaking some ‘rules’, break ’em!
3. Keep it simple & Focus on What you Need in a Capsule Wardrobe
This is probably the most important one of all the tips for starting a capsule wardrobe. At the end of the day, you don’t need to be able to spell “time” to know that it’s 1 pm. What I’m trying to say is, you can create a beautiful outfit with the right basics.
So, be sure to invest in basics to build a capsule wardrobe. For example, a long-sleeved and short-sleeved top for under clothes when it’s cold, and as your main top when it’s warm. Uniqlo has great basics.
When buying basics, keep the following in mind:
- Avoid patterns
- Choose neutral colors that go with a lot of other colors
- Make sure they fit well – not too loose, not too tight
4. Be creative
I know we just talked about keeping it simple and basics being important, but don’t be afraid to get creative. If you have a few favorite colors that you love to wear, you could wear them together in interesting combinations. If you have a couple of black pieces that go well together, wear them together in a variety of ways. If you have a pair of dark blue jeans that work best with a certain color of shirt, wear them in a variety of combinations so that you don’t get stuck in a single color rut. Try out new combinations, even if you think they won’t work together.
The beauty of a capsule wardrobe is that you can wear it in so many different ways. You can add color and prints to add personality to your wardrobe, or you can go for a more simple look and keep it all black. Whatever you choose, you can feel confident and happy in your own skin when you wear a capsule wardrobe. We hope you enjoyed these tips for starting a capsule wardrobe.
